Idleness
All this is only preliminary. I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by belief in the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and prosperity lies in an organized diminution of work.In Praise of Idleness, by Bertrand Russell | A Louis Wain cat
[...]
Let us, for a moment, consider the ethics of work frankly, without superstition. Every human being, of necessity, consumes, in the course of his life, a certain amount of the produce of human labor. Assuming, as we may, that labor is on the whole disagreeable, it is unjust that a man should consume more than he produces. Of course he may provide services rather than commodities, like a medical man, for example; but he should provide something in return for his board and lodging. to this extent, the duty of work must be admitted, but to this extent only.

Small fish, meet big pond: Swansea City
Location: WALES! They're from Wales, a premier league first. Swansea is the home of Catherine Zeta-Jones and a band called The Pooh Sticks.
Nickname: The Swans. I think it's exactly the same as the way Utah are the Utes. I mean what's a Ute? What's a swan? We just don't know.
Stately, Non-Commercial Stadium Name: Deceptive Non-Commercial FAIL. Liberty Stadium, named after a property development company and not the concept. Originally named White Rock Stadium, deceptively NOT after crack.
Crest: Is that a duck? I don't get it. Maybe a "swan" is some kind of welsh duck. Pretty sure the neck is meant to look like an "S." Are the feathery things supposed to evoke a "W?" Mysteries abound.
What they'll bring to the table (metaphorically!): WALES! I'm excited about WALES! I think they try to kick the ball around a little bit, but I think a lot of their success this year was defensively grounded. Could be boring. Their uniforms are all-white (like some kind of weird albino duck) which isn't that exciting. Still, WALES!
What they'll bring to the table (literally!): Hull survived two years as promotion playoff winners. Most don't make it that long.
WALES!

Ron replies, 'At least I'm not a hideous fucker.'Wizard People, Dear Reader: Out from the shadows of God knows what dimension steps the oldest wizard in the books, the Near-Dead Dumbledore. He says, 'No, we're staying here. We're going to find out who that fucking Nick Flannel is, and rule the fucking school. So run home and open your presents. I hope you get a new pillow to cry into.'

Antipodes
The antipodes of any place on the Earth is the place that is diametrically opposite it, so a line drawn from the one to the other passes through the centre of the Earth and forms a true diameter. For example, the antipodes of New Zealand's lower North Island lies in Spain. Most of the Earth's land surfaces have ocean at their antipodes, this being a consequence of most land being in the land hemisphere.Antipodes

Sugar
This brings us to the salient question: Can sugar possibly be as bad as Lustig says it is?

It’s one thing to suggest, as most nutritionists will, that a healthful diet includes more fruits and vegetables, and maybe less fat, red meat and salt, or less of everything. It’s entirely different to claim that one particularly cherished aspect of our diet might not just be an unhealthful indulgence but actually be toxic, that when you bake your children a birthday cake or give them lemonade on a hot summer day, you may be doing them more harm than good, despite all the love that goes with it. Suggesting that sugar might kill us is what zealots do. But Lustig, who has genuine expertise, has accumulated and synthesized a mass of evidence, which he finds compelling enough to convict sugar. His critics consider that evidence insufficient, but there’s no way to know who might be right, or what must be done to find out, without discussing it.Is Sugar Toxic?
If I didn’t buy this argument myself, I wouldn’t be writing about it here. And I also have a disclaimer to acknowledge. I’ve spent much of the last decade doing journalistic research on diet and chronic disease — some of the more contrarian findings, on dietary fat, appeared in this magazine —– and I have come to conclusions similar to Lustig’s.
Small fish, meet big pond: Norwich City
Welcome back, Norwich. And with the questions surrounding some player for QPR and a possible points deduction, this one is for serious.
Location: Norwich, East Anglia. If Cornwall's the cock, then Anglia's the Beyonce. Knowhaimsayin. Me neither. That's in dialect.
Nickname: The Canaries. So, you know, if you're down in a mine or something. There's a long and convoluted history, I think. And they were called that before they even dressed like them.
Stately, Non-Commercial Stadium Name: Carrow Road. Which, as wikipedia wisely points out, was named for the road on which it is located.
Crest: Old as shit. People may have actually used that shield design at Crecy. I like it, though.
What they'll bring to the table (metaphorically!): GREEN! FUCKIN GREEN. As one of two who wear green in the entire 92 team football league, welcome to you colorful fruitcakes.
What they'll bring to the table (literally!): I know almost nothing about them. I bet they suck.

Thought on OBL
So, Osama bin Laden is apparently dead now, and I've been trying to think of something interesting or insightful to say about it.
But after thinking about it for a day, I realize there really isn't anything to say. Osama bin Laden is dead, and nothing has changed. Such is where Our Betters have left us after ten years of war and destruction and oppression and injustice. Everyone might have been celebrating last night, but when they woke up this morning, the world was essentially the same as it had been the morning before. OBL is just another body towering over the totalitarian abyss we find ourselves trapped in today, and one more body doesn't matter.
also: I won't believe he's dead until I see the long-form death certificate.
also: Osama bin Laden's death is al we qaeda hoped for.

Small fish, meet big pond: QPR
When I was a little kid I liked the mid-90's premier league version of Queens Park Rangers because they have a goofy uber-english name. Now they'll be goofin all the way to the bank next year as the almost-certain winners of the second tier.
Location: West London. Much like west Auburn, the home of the city's pampered elite. Becoming the third team from the single London borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (along with Chelsea & Fulham). Specifically they're in Shepherd's Bush. Hehe. Bush.
Nickname: The Hoops. That's what they call horizontal stripes. Adorable.
Stately, Non-Commercial Stadium Name: Loftus Road. I'm told that stadium tours can be booked through the club!
Crest: I'm afraid if I touch it, my hand will get slapped. Here's the old one.
What they'll bring to the table (metaphorically!): Another poorly-supported distraction for rich people? I don't know. All I could find in the way of famous fans were members of obscure bands called Depeche Mode, Deep Purple, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, and The Cure. Also too the non-George-Michael member of Wham! They have decent players and are owned by the dude that runs Formula One racing or something. Honestly, I'm not that excited.
What they'll bring to the table (literally!): I'm guessing they'll have enough money boned into them by the bigwigs that they'll make a meager existence in the premier league for a couple of years at least.
That WAS fun!

Two Auburn-related thoughts
1. Harvey Updyke totally faked his "assault." There are all sorts of reasons to think this is true (mostly related to the laughably implausible details of his "attack" and "injuries"), but the biggest, to me, is that this is where he went to get a snack:

The guy hates Auburn enough to commit a tree-killing and brag about it on the radio, but gets his gas at a place called Tiger Express? I find that difficult to believe. See also.
2. Kiehl Frazier will be the starting quarterback by the end of next season. I don't see Trotter and Brosley doing anything that a particularly capable freshman can't do, and Frazier's skill set matches Gus Malzahn's offense a lot better than the other guys do. If Malzahn could win with the relatively untalented Chris Todd, then he can win with a very talented pure freshman.
Two specific things just happened that make me think that. First, Gene Chizik said that Auburn won't name a starter until the fall, and that freshmen have as much of a chance as anyone. Second, and more important in my decision-making, is the commitment of that 5-star quarterback Zeke Pike. I think the coaches know that Frazier is going to be starting as a freshman, and I think Pike knows it, too. The coaches and Pike both think Frazier will be around for only four years (or less), so Pike feels like he isn't going to be in a position where he has to unseat an established starter if he wants to play for more than one year.

Baby gender clothing
Why have young children’s clothing styles changed so dramatically? How did we end up with two “teams”—boys in blue and girls in pink? When Did Girls Start Wearing Pink?
“It’s really a story of what happened to neutral clothing,” says Paoletti, who has explored the meaning of children’s clothing for 30 years. For centuries, she says, children wore dainty white dresses up to age 6. “What was once a matter of practicality—you dress your baby in white dresses and diapers; white cotton can be bleached—became a matter of ‘Oh my God, if I dress my baby in the wrong thing, they’ll grow up perverted,’ ” Paoletti says.
The march toward gender-specific clothes was neither linear nor rapid. Pink and blue arrived, along with other pastels, as colors for babies in the mid-19th century, yet the two colors were not promoted as gender signifiers until just before World War I—and even then, it took time for popular culture to sort things out.

Fun fact: The original lyrics were "But you should pledge 3E, 'cause they're real cool guys." Unfortunately, Tri Epsilon would not be founded for another 37 years, so nobody knew what they were talking about, and RCA forced them to change the words.

Immigrants

The economic analysis in this report shows the S.B. 1070 approach would have devastating economic consequences if its goals were accomplished. When undocumented workers are taken out of the economy, the jobs they support through their labor, consumption, and tax payments disappear as well. Particularly during a time of profound economic uncertainty, the type of economic dislocation envisioned by S.B. 1070-type policies runs directly counter to the interests of our nation as we continue to struggle to distance ourselves from the ravages of the Great Recession.A Rising Tide or a Shrinking Pie | Spiders Are Wonderful
Conversely, our analysis shows that legalizing undocumented immigrants in Arizona would yield a significant positive economic impact. Based on the historical results of the last legalization program under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, our analysis shows a similar program would increase wages not only for immigrants but also for their native-born co-workers. This would generate more tax revenue and more consumer and business spending, supporting additional jobs throughout the economy.

Blind spot test
I am always learning new things that make me wonder how I have gotten through life without knowing about them. This is the reason you have a blind spot:
The sheet of photoreceptors is much like a sheet of film at the back of a camera. But it has a hole in it. At one location, called the optic nerve head, processes of neurons collect together and pass as a bundle through the photoreceptor sheet to form the optic nerve (the thick black line extending up and to the left in the diagram), which carries information from the eye to the rest of the brain. At this location, there are no photoreceptors, and hence the brain gets no information from the eye about this particular part of the picture of the world. Because of this, you should have a "blind spot" (actually two, one for each eye), a place pretty much in the middle of what you can see where you can't see.

Atlantropa
Atlantropa, also referred to as Panropa, was a gigantic engineering and colonization project devised by the German architect Herman Sörgel in the 1920s and promulgated by him until his death in 1952. Its central feature was a hydroelectric dam to be built across the Strait of Gibraltar, which would have provided enormous amounts of hydroelecticity and would have led to the lowering of the surface of the Mediterranean Sea by up to 200 metres, opening up large new lands for settlement, for example in a now almost totally drained Adriatic Sea.Atlantropa at Wikipedia
Sörgel saw his scheme, projected to take over a century, as a peaceful European-wide alternative to the Lebensraum concepts which later became one of stated reasons for Nazi conquest of new territories. Atlantropa would provide land and food, employment, electric power, and most of all, a new vision for Europe and neighbouring Africa.

SEC football
So now LSU is under suspicion because of that guy connected with Oregon, and Georgia just had a micro-suspension. That has got me thinking. Okay, SEC fans, we've had our time. The conference has been at the top, and things are bound to turn down. Since that's inevitable, I want the conference to go out with a little style.
Let's say that the current situation at LSU is just the tip of an iceberg, that the school has been hiring all sorts of illegal recruiters. That's LSU. I know that Bobby Petrino, Houston Nutt, and Nick Saban would cheat. I think Mean Eugene is honest, but perhaps the culture at Auburn is too corrupt for him, and also his players are obviously burglars and criminals. I know that Tennessee is inherently cheating. Mark Richt seems too goody-goody, but that's what people thought about Jim Tressel, too. Maybe Steve Spurrier is willing to bend the rules a little bit more than usual, thinking at his age he's got nothing to lose. Perhaps some of that Kentucky anything-to-win in basketball has leaked over to the football program.
What I am describing is a conference with the kind of rampant lawlessness we might associate with the old Southwest Conference. But it's on a much bigger stage, with much bigger stakes. And that's what I want to see: multiple titles, multiple probations, multiple scandals. I want serious discussions about a school getting the death penalty. I want the kind of hubris that poets would write about, or that could at least be a made-for-TV movie. I want to do this old school.

The Ides of March
The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martii) is the name of 15 March in the Roman calendar, probably referring to the day of the full moon. The term ides was used for the 15th day of the months of March, May, July, and October, and the 13th day of the other months. The Ides of March was a festive day dedicated to the god Mars and a military parade was usually held. In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was killed in 44 B.C. Julius Caesar was stabbed (23 times) to death in the Roman Senate led by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus and 60 other conspirators.Ides of March
On his way to the Theatre of Pompey (where he would be assassinated), Caesar saw a seer who had foretold that harm would come to him not later than the Ides of March. Caesar joked, "Well, the Ides of March have come", to which the seer replied "Ay, they have come, but they are not gone." This meeting is famously dramatized in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, when Caesar is warned to "beware the Ides of March".

Football misbehavior week
Auburn players breaking and entering, etc etc etc, but young dudes are generally idiots, so I am not surprised they did something stupid. What I really am struck by is The Ohio State Situation.
I am trying to think of another situation in which a coach got off as lightly as Jim Tressel apparently will. He knowingly lied about eligibility-ending violations by players. That is a resign-before-you-get-fired situation. And yet Tressel is still around. The man has no shame! All that, just to beat Arkansas.

Memory
“Photographic memory?” I asked.Secrets of a Mind-Gamer
He chuckled again. “Photographic memory is a detestable myth. Doesn’t exist. In fact, my memory is quite average. All of us here have average memories.”
That seemed hard to square with the fact that he knew huge chunks of “Paradise Lost” by heart. Earlier I watched him recite a list of 252 random digits as effortlessly as if it were his telephone number.
“What you have to understand is that even average memories are remarkably powerful if used properly,” Cooke said. He explained to me that mnemonic competitors saw themselves as “participants in an amateur research program” whose aim is to rescue a long-lost tradition of memory training.
Today we have books, photographs, computers and an entire superstructure of external devices to help us store our memories outside our brains, but it wasn’t so long ago that culture depended on individual memories. A trained memory was not just a handy tool but also a fundamental facet of any worldly mind. It was considered a form of character-building, a way of developing the cardinal virtue of prudence and, by extension, ethics. Only through memorizing, the thinking went, could ideas be incorporated into your psyche and their values absorbed.
